Inauguration of fashion students’ association (FASA) – Wa Polytechnic

The inauguration of the Fashion Students’ Association (FASA) was held on Wednesday 5th of December, 2018 at the studio of the Department of Fashion Design and Modelling. Dr. Nicholas Addo Tetteh, (Dean, School of Applied Art Design and General Studies – SAADGS), was the chairman of the occasion. The special guest of honour was the Dean of Students’ Affairs of Wa Polytechnic, (Aliata I. Mumuni). Other dignitaries who honoured the occasion were the Public Relation Officer of Wa Polytechnic Mr. Abdul-Rahaman Zakaria, staff and students of Fashion Design and Modelling (FDM), staff and students of Industrial Art Department, representatives of Garment Association, the Coordinator for Entrepreneurship Innovation Directorate, the SRC President and some invited guests.

The program started with an opening prayer by Felicia Nyuori (level 100 student of FDM). This was then followed by the welcome address by Mr. Robert Ahiabor (Acting Head, FDM Department). He reiterated the need to uphold the mission and vision of the department. He also cautioned the students and executives of the association not to indulge in any act of vandalism that will bring the name of the department and the institution into disrepute, but must follow the laid down procedure in addressing grievances. He commended the executive of the association for a good work done.

Madam Aliata I. Mumuni (the special guest for the occasion) gave a Motivational speech: she encouraged the students to be hardworking, discipline and determine to reach greater heights of success. She cautioned the students to desist from acts of indiscipline and corruption. She encouraged the executives and the members of the association to work as a team. She explained that Teamwork simply means Together Each Accomplishes More.

The Master of Ceremony for the event, who also doubles as the Patron of the Association Mr. Isaac Kofi Awuyah, gave a brief history of FASA. He said, the Fashion Students’ Association (FASA) was established by the then head of department Dr. Nicholas Addo Tetteh on Thursday 21st December, 2017. With the prior aim of fostering cordial relationship between students and staff, promoting the academic excellence for students through field trips, games and student centered activities, also to seek the welfare of students at all time. The association started with fourteen (14) members (first batch of students of the department). The head of department in collaboration with staff and the student’s body appointed a three member interim executives to lead the association until inauguration and election of executives. The interim executives of the association are: Master Alhassan Toufiq as President, Madam Rukaya Kappiah Abdulai as Secretary and Madam Philliss Yiryele as Treasurer.

Mr. Isaac Kofi Awuyah then schooled the guests and students on the emblems and colours of the association; the emblems used in the logo are scissors, measuring tape, open book and mannequin. The colours of the association are turquoise, sky blue, light green and purple. He also reminded the guests and the students of the Motto and Slogan of the association. Thus, FASA: Passion for fashion, FASA: We design and sew. He concluded by thanking some personalities who have contributed immensely towards the success of the association.

The inauguration speech was delivered by the Chairman of the event, Dr. Nicholas A. Tetteh (Dean, SAADGS). He was impressed by the organisation of the event and encouraged the students to uphold the spirit of integrity and discipline in the classroom and in their professional lives. He then cut a ribbon to inaugurate the association officially to the amazement of all presence. He was supported by the Special Guest of honour, the Ag. Head of Fashion Design and Modelling department, the P.R.O of Wa Polytechnic and other invited guests.

The climax of the event was the showcase of exhibits of students and runway by female students of the department. The students exhibited their creativities in apparel design and illustrations skills as well as individual garments constructed during the semester.  The event was finally concluded with a vote of thanks by Master Salifu Alhassan, a second year student of the department of Fashion Design and Modelling. The function came to an end with a group photograph of invited guests, staff and students of the department.
